A shackle, also known as a gyve, is a U-shaped piece of metal secured with a clevis pin or bolt across the opening, or a hinged metal loop secured with a quick-release locking pin mechanism. They are used as a connecting link in all manner of rigging systems, from boats and ships to industrial crane rigging. A carabiner is a variety of shackle used in mountaineering. It is easy! You will need some jack stands, a floor jack and a couple 3/4" wrenches to do the job. A pry bar would also help. You should be able to do it in a few hours with a buddy...to make it as easy as possible, do it on a level surface, put the Jeep on jack stands (under the frame) with the front tires (still on) about 3" off the ground. Remove both front shackles (with the floor jack under the front diff.) and lower the front down so the tires are on the ground. Install the new shackles to the frame (do not tighten yet) and jack the front back up and guide the leaf eyes into the shackles. Install bolts, remove jack stands, set on the ground and then tighten the shackle bolts. Do not over tighten the bolts. The factory steel bumper is not strong enough IMHO to weld d-ring shackles to. There are bolt on ones available but again - I wouldn't trust them on the factory bumper. If you're dead set on d-rings check out the link below; these bolt to the same place your factory tow hooks attach but allow you to use a shackle.
