From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Handcuffs are restraint devices designed to secure an individual's wrists close together. They comprise two parts, linked together by a chain, a hinge or in the case of rigid cuffs, a bar. Each half has a rotating arm which engages with a ratchet that prevents it from being opened once closed around a person's wrist. Without the key, the handcuffs cannot be unlocked and so the restrained person is unable to move their wrists more than a few centimetres/inches apart, making many tasks difficult or impossible. This is usually done to prevent suspected criminals from escaping police custody. From Wikipedia under the

And while they were driving to my house to arrest me I then handcuffed myself to my heavy fridge, how would they remove the handcuffs? What if their size of key doesn't fit my handcuffs? Answered by Ryan - Thu Dec 17 20:59:07 2009 What would happen if you escaped your handcuffs during an arrest? Q. Hypothetically speaking, say you were placed under arrest, seated in the back of the police vehicle, and happened to have enough time (because cops spoke too long to witnesses?),skill (prior knowledge/experience),res ources (a lucky paperclip in ur pocket) and testosterone to pick (unlock) your handcuffs.. What would you expect to ensue if you did? Do note: you are in the back of the vehicle, and you're rather uncomfortable in the back.. (its not like you can run) Asked by JakeZ - Wed Nov 21 04:39:44 2007 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments A. First of all...you would never be able to get out of the back of the cruiser. There is no lock/unlock feature in the backseat. The door has to be opened from the outside. You would just be un-cuffed in the back of the cage. They are trained how to handle these situations. My advice...Don't be an idiot... Answered by jenny - Wed Nov 21 09:03:45 2007 Is it possible to shoot the chain of handcuffs?
Q. Sometimes you get to see ppl in movies shooting the chain of handcuffs to seperate them, using a rifle or handgun. Is it even possible, or would that kind of a shot be causing severe injuries to the hands, maybe even ripp them off? Asked by FOX - Fri Oct 12 20:11:45 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Would only work under tightly controlled circumstances. Now in the movies the guy always holds his hands out to one side and his girlfriend spins around with a glock or a Beretta and snap shots, "PING" , the chain is broken and the young lovers escape to freedom. Most bullets have copper jackets with lead cores, Both of the materials are softer than the welded links of a pair of handcuffs. So the bullet would possibly deform a link badly enough to brake the weld, probably not, but possibly. More likely it would shatter and hurt someone near by, like the guy in the cuffs. I don't like thinking about how your wrists would feel. Now with an armor piercing round and a good solid rest beneath the chain, yes, you'd be able to brake… [cont.] Answered by Douglas R - Fri Oct 12 21:28:29 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "handcuffs"
